Next School Counseling
At Kingsley, we are proud that our students consistently thrive at exceptional next schools. Most of our graduates attend one of their top-choice institutions, with approximately 90% of families selecting an independent or exam school for middle school.
Beginning in Fifth Grade, Kingsley partners closely with each family to support a thoughtful and successful transition to the next stage of their child’s educational journey.
Kingsley’s Next School Counseling program is designed to help each child find a school community in which they will thrive academically, socially, and personally. Families work closely with the Director of Next School Counseling throughout the placement process and receive individualized guidance, information, and support at every stage.
Kingsley helps families understand the nuances of each school’s admissions process while identifying potential school matches that align with each student’s strengths, interests, and goals. The counseling process draws upon classroom observations, Progress Reports, Parent-Teacher Conferences, and a deep understanding of each child as a learner and community member.
As part of the application process, faculty members write thoughtful recommendations that highlight each student’s strengths, character, and growth. Applications also include a letter from the Director of Elementary, as well as additional support from faculty members who can speak to a student’s unique qualities and contributions.
Mock Interviews & Self-Advocacy
As part of the next school process, Sixth Grade students participate in a series of mock interviews designed to build confidence, communication skills, and self-awareness. Students meet individually with faculty and staff members, including the Director of Next School Counseling, for practice interviews that mirror the experience of independent school admissions interviews.
Following each interview, students receive thoughtful feedback on their speaking, presentation, and ability to reflect on their experiences and goals. Through this process, students learn to present themselves authentically while developing lifelong skills in communication, reflection, and self-advocacy.
Sixth Grade Mentor Program
Every graduating Sixth Grader is paired with a Faculty Mentor. Through regular meetings and conversations, mentors help students reflect on their growth, navigate challenges, and prepare for the transition to middle school and beyond.
The mentor program allows students to build meaningful relationships with trusted adults outside the classroom while strengthening important skills such as organization, problem solving, self-awareness, and self-advocacy. Mentors also collaborate closely with classroom teachers, creating a unified support system for each student during their final year at Kingsley.

Graduate Spotlight
Luke Sweet ‘22 invited Tim Caldwell, his teacher in Lower Elementary, to a Roxbury Latin ceremony honoring impactful and inspiring educators.
I was proud and honored to receive the invitation in the mail, and it was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with Luke. It's amazing to see how much he's grown and to hear how well-prepared he felt for the rigorous courses at Roxbury Latin. He's balancing homework and athletics, learning Latin, and taking the train back and forth to school each day. I was so impressed by his maturity and sense of responsibility, and I know those traits began in the Montessori classroom.
