Independent Bookshops Encourage Lifelong Readers

Many families have now heard my story about growing up not knowing how to read. I was raised during a time when the rhetoric around the reading curriculum did not include my learning style. Of course, that did not stop my parents from showering me with the most colorful books filled with glorious pictures and captivating storylines. For us, it was Louis Strymish’s New England Mobile Book Fair.

ERB Testing is Next Week: A Few Ways to Support Worried Students

ERB assessments are coming to grades 3–6 next week. For some of our students it will be just another assignment or task to complete. For other students, though, this is a time that might trigger anxiety and concern over the process, requirements, and outcomes.

Summer is Just Around the Corner! Maintaining some structure helps students thrive.

It has been many years since I was in elementary school. Okay, it has been decades since I saw the inside of an elementary school as a student. And while I will keep the exact number of years a secret, I still remember the thoughts that came to mind on the playground during recess when we all discussed our summer plans.

Eight Positive Outcomes of Practical Life

Practical Life is the hallmark of a Montessori primary (3-6) environment, but it is often misunderstood by outside observers. After all, what child in the year 2022 needs to polish their shoes, or wash laundry on an antique washboard? However simple, these utilitarian materials serve a purpose far higher than their worldly functions: to help the child coordinate their movements and prepare for all future intellectual exploration.

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Student Learning

Last  week  I  had  a  chance  to  lunch  with  four  students  from  Upper  Elementary. This  was  quite  impromptu. My  original  plan  had  been  to  leave  the  building  for  twenty  minutes  so  I  could  take  a  power  walk;  something  I  try  to  do  daily  when  I  know  there  will  be  no  time  for  a  run  after  work. Determined,  I  had  my  coat  and  hat  on,  and  I  was  quickly  exiting  the  fifth  floor  when  a  fourth  grader  stopped  me  and  asked  if  I  would  sit  with  a  group  of  young  ladies  for  lunch  since  the  person  they  normally  eat  with  was  absent  that  day. As  her  teacher  shuffled  her  back  to  the  classroom  not  knowing  what  I  was  just  asked,  without  pausing,  I  said  “yes”  to  the  request. I  wasn’t  sure  what  I  had  just  committed  myself  to,  but  I  knew  there  would  be  no  power  walk  on  this  day. The  student  quickly  reached  out  to  her  friends  to  say  lunch  was  on!
