Kingsley’s Preschool Program serves children
ages 3-6. Within our large, sunlit classrooms, children are encouraged
to use their developing knowledge of the world and sense of curiosity
to explore. Through their interactions with their peers and the
intriguing materials that fill their classrooms, children cultivate
a lifelong love of learning.
The Preschool learning environment prepares children for the later
Elementary curriculum. Montessori lessons inculcate basic skills
in computation, pre-reading and pre-writing. In addition to classroom-based
learning, Preschool students enjoy classes in Spanish, science,
art, music, drama and movement (physical education).
The learning environment provides children with the necessary skills
for academic and personal growth. Each Preschool classroom is multi-aged
and the equipment, materials and furniture are child-focused and
child-sized. The environment is an integral part of the child’s
learning day. This is evident by the children’s care of their
own classroom and the overall school community. Children learn early
that Kingsley is “their school!”
Classrooms are organized to include many resources for learning,
highlighted by the Montessori materials that exemplify developmentally
appropriate practice. Children are respected for their ability to
make choices about what they will investigate at any given time
and are taught to extend that respect to their classmates and peers.
Kindergarten at Kingsley is an all-day program.
In the morning, Kindergarten students join with their younger, Preschool
classmates to serve as mentors, extending their own learning and
deepening their understanding of skills and concepts. They are leaders
in their classroom communities, guiding their friends to explore
and take on challenges that further their learning. In the afternoon,
Kindergarteners work individually and in groups on deeper investigations
in language arts, mathematics and the Arts and Sciences. The all-day
Kindergarten Program includes weekly visits to a local athletic
facility, where children engage in cooperative games and learn the
fundamentals of elementary physical education and sportsmanship.
Throughout the year, Kindergarteners have opportunities to showcase
their learning across the curriculum. In all-school assemblies,
the Kindergarten Science Fair, the Annual Art Exhibition and other
special events, Kindergarteners play a vital role in the life of
the Kingsley community.
