Technology enriches our curriculum by providing alternatives for
exploring, presenting and understanding. Technology skills are applied
in subject-matter learning, enabling students to acquire skills
in context. By the time they have completed sixth grade, our students
problem-solve, choose the tools most appropriate for accomplishing
a task efficiently, and use the Internet to research, synthesize
and present information cogently.
Preschool students are introduced to various computer programs
such as KidPix®, developing important keyboard and mouse skills.
We emphasize appropriate use and terminology to enable children
to gain fluency in the proper function and use of technology.
Students begin the Elementary technology curriculum by learning
how to log onto the Kingsley network, launch personal settings and
work with age-appropriate software. Individualized lessons focus
on a particular tool, function, or feature of specific software
programs.
When students are proficient in basic skills, they learn about
saving, accessing and printing documents independently. Projects
are directly linked to ongoing classroom activities, such as creating
word matching cards and short word processing documents that support
the broader language arts curriculum.
At the third-grade level, students use technology in their weekly
science lab meetings, as well as in their classrooms to create research
reports using Microsoft Word® with downloaded images or KidPix
illustrations, all under teacher supervision. Students also begin
to explore digital photography.
Upper Elementary students use technology in the classroom for research,
word processing, idea organization and presentation. Students work
collaboratively with various software programs and receive guided
instruction on the use of the Internet. We added a Multi-media Library and
Technology Center to work in close partnership with the classroom environments
allowing students and faculty to further expand their learning and instruction
with technology.
Weekly science lab instruction incorporates technology by encouraging
students to utilize print and multimedia resources. Students research
topics of study and then use various technologies to present their
ideas to their peers, teachers and parents. Sixth grade students
may use PowerPoint®, for example, to accompany their senior
project presentations.
