The Visual and Performing Arts program at Kingsley provides children
from Preschool through Elementary with rich and varied experiences.
Students explore drama, music, movement and dance, and the visual
arts in a range of studies. In the visual arts, students study artists,
their unique styles and place in history, along with specific hands-on
skills and techniques. Lessons include curriculum links to classroom
themes and projects.
In the Preschool, children create works of art that draw upon play
and imagination using a variety of two- and three-dimensional media. They
explore visual concepts such as space, pattern, contrast and form.
They begin to understand how we use art to communicate. Curriculum:
Preschool.
In Elementary, students draw upon their own experiences and imagination
to make works of art that express their feelings, ideas and observations.
They use two- and three-dimensional art forms, employing a range
of media and processes. They begin to look more closely at their
own art and the work of others, responding to meaning and expressive
qualities. They also make connections between art and the real world,
developing an understanding of the value of art to a society. Curriculum:
Lower Elementary and Curriculum:
Upper Elementary
Music and drama at the Preschool level help students build a basic
understanding and enjoyment of self-expression. Children learn the
elements of music — including melody, harmony and rhythm —
through voice, instruments, dance and listening exercises. Theater
arts bring their favorite stories to life. Theater games teach children
how to communicate without words. Curriculum:
Preschool
In Lower Elementary, children explore different performance genres,
musical notation and composition. Third graders spend part of the
year learning to play the recorder, which cultivates an appreciation
of musical concepts like pitch, rhythm and tempo. Elementary students
join with their older friends to build community through the arts
during weekly assemblies. Curriculum:
Lower Elementary
In Upper Elementary, students explore different performance genres,
musical notation and composition during weekly music and drama classes.
Upper Elementary students study the lives and music of composers,
world music, blues and jazz, as well as character creation, public
speaking skills, communication through scat singing and group storytelling.
