The original Kingsley School was founded in 1938 by two pioneering
educators, Edith Kingsley and Helen Loud. Beginning as a small
private school for six students in the Back Bay of Boston, the
school grew and eventually acquired its own building, first on
Marlborough Street, and then at 30 Fairfield, one of our current
locations.
In 1948, Mr. Lowell Kingsley became the school’s director,
a position he held for almost four decades. He maintained the
school’s focus on small classes, individual instruction
and a flexible and caring environment. Mr. Kingsley still frequents
Kingsley on a weekly basis and serves as Trustee Emeritus on the
Board of Trustees.
The Back Bay Montessori, which offered a Preschool program, was
an immediate success following its founding in 1986. It grew quickly
from 13 students to more than 50. Expanded enrollment inspired
the Kingsley School and Back Bay Montessori to officially become
the Kingsley Montessori School.
As demand increased for the Montessori method of education at
higher levels, the school launched an Elementary program in the
early 1990’s. The school continued the classic child-centered
Montessori approach to learning in its Lower Elementary program
(Grades 1-3). The Upper Elementary program (Grades 4-6), followed
with a successful design to transition students to the more traditional
curriculum emphasized in Boston's independent and public middle
and high schools.
Kingsley Montessori School has demonstrated consistent growth.
Today, with an enrollment of 190 students and 44 faculty and staff,
we hold a strong position among independent schools in Boston.
The acceptance rate of our students to the area’s finest
schools reflects Kingsley’s success in nurturing the overall
growth and development of its students.
In 1998, Renee DuChainey-Farkes became Head of School, after
serving for 12 years as a founding parent and Chairman of the
Board. Renee and her husband, Gary, have four sons, all of whom
attended Kingsley.
