The Kingsley Montessori School Board of Trustees is comprised of a variety of professionals and educators, including parents of children currently enrolled at Kingsley, parents of alumni, members of the community, the Head of School, plus a faculty and a KMPTA representative. The Board sets school policy, oversees the financial well-being of the institution and supports the fundraising efforts undertaken by the school. Members are committed to promoting the growth and development of the school, its mission, educational programs and vision for the future. The Board welcomes parent participation in committees established for finance, development, technology, marketing and communication, facilities, planning and other purposes.
The Trustees are responsible for setting the policies of the school and developing its mission statement. In addition, the Trustees monitor the activities of the school to be certain that it has the tools to implement the policies and carry out the mission. The Trustees do not participate in the administration of the school, or in the development of curriculum and educational policies, all of which are the responsibilities of the Head of School. The Board and Head of School communicate about issues on an ongoing basis, particularly about issues where the Board can provide leadership. The Head of School reports to the Board Chair at regularly scheduled meetings, and other meetings and contacts occur frequently. The Head of School also communicates as necessary with members of the Board to ensure that issues are appropriately vetted.
In determining how issues are to be resolved and in reaching decisions, addressing strategic and making operational decisions, the Board and the Head of School apply NAIS and AISNE guidelines for best practices of Boards. Particular attention is paid to these principles:
- Strategic decisions are the responsibility of the Board, and include major policies, leadership, selecting the Head of School and financial issues.
- Issues relating to staffing, admissions, curriculum, program, schedules, and administration are operational decisions and are responsibilities of the Head of School.
- Decision-making and support for decisions made with respect to the budget, terms of employment, financial policies, building renovations, enrollment and programmatic changes are shared responsibilities of the Head of School and the Board.
- The Head of School is responsible for all day-to-day decision-making. The Head of School looks to Trustees whenever feasible for input prior to decision-making, and is expected to keep the Board informed about issues, concerns and plans for change.
