Another core of our curriculum is appreciation for the great outdoors.
We are committed to providing a variety of experiences that go far
beyond our classrooms and even Boston. The outdoor world has so
much to offer!
A Mountain Classroom Our outdoor education program features two much-anticipated events.
In the beginning of the year, students in grades 4-6 embark on an
outdoor adventure in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. This
is a three-day overnight trip that includes physical challenges
(hiking) as well as mental and social challenges (team-building).
Students also investigate plant and animal life, geology and history
in the most direct and meaningful ways. This trip is guided by the
Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) through their Mountain Classroom
program.
Nature’s Classroom Our second trip involves students in grades 1-6. The program, Nature’s
Classroom, provides experiences in outdoor education, including
hands-on science. Older students engage in team-building activities,
younger children in careful observation of natural phenomenon. Students
learn science, conservation, history and outdoor skills. Nature’s
Classroom stays range from two nights for upper elementary students,
to one night for third graders, and one day for students in grades
1 and 2.
Community Building Day Lower elementary students (grades 1-3) begin each academic year
by taking part in a community-building day at the Broadmoor Sanctuary
in Natick. They explore nature and deepen their understanding of
Charles River ecosystems.
Rock Climbing Our upper elementary students develop skill and confidence at Metro
Park, a nearby rock-climbing facility.
Experiences in the great outdoors — in combination with leadership
and classroom community-building opportunities — become highlights
of the school year. These programs help students develop team-building
skills and deepen their friendships, as well as enrich their sense
of community.
