Outdoor education meets classroom instruction during year-round
investigations of the Charles River. To appreciate our sense of
place, students explore the ecosystems of the Charles River, and
explore its relationship to our school and community. Led by our
sixth graders (who have an integral role in the design, planning
and implementation of the study), students at the kindergarten through
sixth grade participate in activities, trips and presentations,
as well as community service projects. What an opportunity to learn
about the history, geography and wildlife of this spectacular natural
resource located just blocks away!
Classroom connections to the rich Montessori curriculum provide
the framework for lessons including use of the compass rose to map
various routes to and from the Charles River, identifying and labeling
parts of river fish, embarking on a winter walk to observe animal
tracks, building a fish weir, discussing watersheds and learning
about the history of the Charles River from a Department of Conservation
and Recreation (DCR) park ranger.
